The list of documents to prepare for your tax return

Gather everything in one go: the full list of documents so that your tax return goes off without back-and-forth.

A tax return takes an hour when everything is there, and three weeks when one document is missing. Here is what to gather. Open a folder and tick things off as you go.

Income

  • The salary certificate from each employer during the year.
  • Statements for unemployment, daily sickness allowance, disability or military insurance benefits, where applicable.
  • Pension statements: AHV/AVS, pension fund, annuities.
  • For the self-employed: the accounts for the year (balance sheet and income statement).
  • Rental income, if you own a property that is let.

Accounts and assets

  • Bank statements as at 31 December for all your accounts, including accounts abroad.
  • Securities statements and portfolio statements.
  • The surrender value of your life insurance policies.
  • Documents for your properties: official tax valuation, mortgage interest statement, invoices for work done.
  • The value of your vehicle, if you bought one during the year.

Deductions

  • Pillar 3a statements and, where applicable, second-pillar buy-in confirmations.
  • Health insurance premiums and the subsidy statement if you receive one.
  • Childcare costs: invoices from the day nursery, the childminder, after-school care.
  • Professional training costs.
  • Maintenance payments made, with proof of payment.
  • Donations to recognised charities.
  • Unreimbursed medical costs, if they are significant.
  • Your travel costs: home-to-work distance, transport pass.

The rest

  • The previous year's tax assessment, which we use as our starting point.
  • Your changes of situation: marriage, separation, a birth, a move, a property purchase.

Not sure about a document?

Send it anyway: better one document too many than a deduction lost. We sort them.
