Deductible, model, insurer: the three levers on your premium
Your health insurance premium is not set in stone. Three settings move it, and one appointment a year is when you can change them.
Basic insurance is identical everywhere: the same benefits, reimbursed in the same way, whichever insurer you are with. What changes is the price. And three settings determine it.
The deductible
For an adult it ranges from 300 francs — the minimum — to 2,500 francs, with several steps in between. For a child it starts at zero and goes up to 600 francs.
The higher the deductible, the lower the premium. Above the deductible there is still the retention fee: 10% of the costs, capped at 700 francs a year for an adult and 350 francs for a child.
The right choice cannot be guessed: it depends on how much care you actually use, year after year.
The model
Family doctor, care network, telemedicine: agreeing to go through a first point of contact before seeing a specialist gives you a discount set by law. For many families this is the most comfortable lever — habits barely change, and the premium falls.
The insurer
Switching insurer is not up for negotiation: every insurer must accept you for basic insurance, with no health questions and no exclusions, whatever your age and whatever treatment you are on.
Only one date counts, and it is strict: your cancellation must have arrived at your insurer before 30 November. Not posted — arrived.
And in Fribourg, don't forget the premium subsidy
The canton grants a premium reduction subject to income conditions. It does not arrive on its own: you have to apply, and the deadline is 31 August. Many households would be entitled to it without knowing.
A franc saved on premiums stays whole
That is what makes this item so interesting: the tax deduction for health insurance is a flat amount. Paying more brings you nothing more at tax time.
