Insurance: the franc you save is a franc you keep in full
In Fribourg, the health insurance deduction is a flat amount: paying a higher premium does not give you a single centime more. That is what makes insurance the first item to review.
Many people think their health insurance premiums "go through on their taxes". In Fribourg that is true — but not in the way they imagine.
The canton grants a flat amount. A fixed figure, the same whatever premium you actually pay. Whether your monthly bill is modest or very high, the deduction does not move by a single franc.
This mechanism is not the same everywhere: the canton of Vaud, for instance, allows the premiums actually paid up to a ceiling, and Geneva applies a distinctly more generous one. Each canton has its own rules — the ones below apply to Fribourg.
What this means for you
Every franc of premium paid unnecessarily leaves your pocket and never comes back. No deduction will soften it.
The reverse is true too, and that is what makes this item so interesting: every franc you save on your premiums, you keep in full.
Your other insurance is even clearer
Household contents, personal liability, legal expenses, life insurance: those premiums are barely deductible at all, in every canton. You pay them with money that has already been taxed.
Here too the consequence is simple: if you cut out an overlap or a cover you don't need, the saving is complete. None of it goes back to the tax office.
That is why we always start with insurance when looking to ease a budget. It is where the effort pays off fastest.
One date to remember: 30 November
To change health insurer on 1 January, your cancellation must have arrived before 30 November. After that date, you are in for another year.
We go through your policies with you
We compare what the market offers and read your policies again — we often find overlaps, or cover being paid for unknowingly.
